The chemical analyses carried out on toys and all the other articles related to children care have the general aim to check for example raw materials, varnishes, adhesives to verify that they are not hazardous and they are conform with all safety requirements.
The Institute has the equipments to carry out, for example, the following analyses:
- Heavy metals: analyses performed in accordance with EN 71/3 to assess the migration of certain elements
- Conformity with Health Decree no. 214 of 29/07/2003 : analyses on specific materials (example paints and varnishes, plastics, wood )
- Migration of optical brighteners
- Sensorial analyses "taste" : Robinson's test
- Contact with foods
- Sweat and saliva tests
- Cosmetic toys: specific analyses and formulas control
- Metal objects in direct contact with skin: determination of migration and/or content of nickel
- Rubbers and elastomers: determination of accelerating, vulcanising and anti-oxidant agents, nitrosamines
- PVC: determination of content or migration of plasticizers (phthalates)
- Aromatic amines in fabrics and leathers
- Radioactivity: concentration of radioactive isotope of potassium 40 and tritium
- Tests on fabrics: fibre composition, analyses of disperse and cancerogenic dyes and colourfastness.
